Portfolio Guide

The portfolio module helps you track holdings, P&L, and compliance breakdown. It’s a workflow tool—not a broker or advisor.

Create a portfolio

  • Choose a base currency (keep it consistent with most of your holdings).
  • Use a simple name and (optional) strategy tag (e.g., “Long-term core”, “Trading”).
  • Separate goals: long-term investing vs short-term trading should not share the same portfolio.

Add positions (clean data)

Good portfolio analytics depends on clean inputs. The minimum reliable fields are: symbol, shares, cost basis, and purchase date.

  • Shares: keep decimals if your broker supports fractional shares.
  • Cost basis: store your effective average entry price.
  • Currency: know which side is base vs quote when importing.

Transactions & bookkeeping

Use transactions to keep an audit trail (especially useful for advisors). Record buys, sells, dividends, fees, and purification payments.

  • Include fees/commissions when possible to avoid overstating performance.
  • For dividends, record the payment date and amount to support purification estimates.
  • If you track cash deposits/withdrawals, performance analysis becomes more reliable.

Compliance monitoring

Compliance is not a one-time check. Ratios change as filings update and prices move. Build a routine:

  • Scan after earnings and major corporate events.
  • Scan after large price moves if market-cap denominators matter.
  • Investigate any drift and document decisions for borderline cases.

Purification & estimates

Purification calculations can vary by scholar and methodology. Our numbers are educational estimates based on available inputs.

  • Use estimates to understand magnitude and track accrued purification.
  • For formal religious guidance, consult qualified scholars/boards.
  • Keep your own records for donations and reporting.

Troubleshooting

  • Position value looks wrong: double-check currency and cost basis units.
  • Compliance breakdown feels inconsistent: check methodology and scan freshness.
  • Missing asset data: coverage may vary; report the symbol via feedback widget.
